Sportsman Aviation Mad Dog 46 ARF
Does anyone have experience with the Sportsman Aviation Mad Dog 46 ARF? I saw it for the first time today on the Hobby People site.

It has that "Vintage" look with the open cockpit. It sort of reminds me of a SIG Astro Hog.
It may be a new model. I really like the look. I'm nowhere near ready to fly it; I haven't soloed with my trainer, but I look at potential second or third planes quite often.

I hope you are luckier than I was in trying to get an answer, as I asked the identical question just a few days ago.
I also did not get an answer regarding my second question which is, what is the quality of the kits from Sportsman Aviation, the manufacturer of the Mad Dog.

I thought I searched the forum before I posted. I guess I intended to but forgot to actually do the search.
After reading the Waco thread, it appears Sportsman builds a pretty good plane.
Maybe someone will review the Mad Dog soon. Hobby People has it marked down from 149.99 to 139.99; too bad they don't have a free shipping threshold like some of the other mail order houses.

Mad Dog
I went in to Hobby People the other day and checked it out. It looks like a pretty nice looking ARF, the wings are covered in clear red covering, didn't see many wrinkles in them or the rest of the plane, the turtle deck is blow molded plastic which has to be cut to fit, and of course it has the typical ARF hardware.
I plan on buying one when they go on sale for $99, which they tend to do with all their ARFs in this price range.

I believe Global makes them, but their site has been pretty useless when it comes to getting info about their products.

Just go to the Hobby People website and click on "e-mail us" at the bottom of the home page. Ask whatever questions you want and they will respond. There is no better customer service in this business than Hobby People.
There is no website for Sportsman Aviation. That is a brand name that Global (Hobby People) use for a certain line of products that they develop and import.

I have the WACO 60 size Biplane form Sportman Aviation and the quality is very good. I would think the Mad Dog would be the same. They both came out around the same time. I was thinking of getting the MAD DOG for a fun weekend flyer!

I have one about 90% ready. Have to fit the cowl and a few other things. Looks like it will be a good one. I'm using a TT 42 on it. It would be very easy to get this thing noseheavy, and there isn't much width to the firewall. I looked at a Saito 56, but the thing stuck out way too far for my liking. The 42 is a good, strong engine on the TT 40 Stick. So, it should pull the Dog OK. Quality-wise it is nice. Very light weight, but built right. I am using the stock hardware since it is only a 40 sized plane.

I have the Sportsman av P40. The color was poor but the plane is so nice that I am bashing it to standoff scale. I added rotating retracts , interior and a new monocote coler schem .While wtriping the film off I coudl see how nice and true this plane was build.I am sold on SP . In addition if your looking for a p40 you have to try one of the stores, they stped selling this and many of the stores said it was due the coler scheme

I owned one about a year ago. with the .46, it was very fast and flew as good or better than anything I have ever owned. I turned all the rates up and simply enjoyed the hell out of it. Its only week point is the landing gear. Throw the ones that come with the plane in the garbage and by cheapo nylon ones from your LHS and screw them to the fuse about two inches IN FRONT of where the stock ones would go. I found that it nosed over easy with the stock gear and they should have been one piece. Once I replaced the landing gear the plane was flawless!
I crashed that sweet little plane trying a stupid stunt on a five dollar bet (I lost the plane and five bucks). I miss that plane.
It's kinda ugly but it flies and lands like a total dream.

I have a Mad Dog and really like it. It is my 1st Sportsman Aviation plane and I think they make a good ARF for the price. I agree that the landing gear is not good but Sportsman Aviation sent me a new one with no problem at all. With the stock gear you could not fly off a grass srtip.
The covering has a problem with the striping coming off and the red changing color if any CA comes in contact with it. I have a 46 Magnum on it and the vertical is awsome. I would buy another if this one should meet with the "C" word.

RE: Sportsman Aviation Mad Dog 46 ARF
I finally received the ARF. and checked out most parts.
I was surprised how light the fuse and wing were. Made of light balsa. For weight reduction.
And, the fuse and wing are slim and it should have very little resistant when flying.
The fuse is as slim as pattern plane and wings are as slim as gliders.
I think OS 40FP should be more than enough power to have fun.
The wingspan is so much bigger than the fuselage (comapred other 40 size planes' ratio) and I laid those out on the floor and I liked
the proportion of the plane. Nice covering jobs too.
The parts were all there, EVEB the prop and spinner.
I haven't started building it yet but so far, for $80, it can't be better.
Thanks.
Jake.
