Default DLE TIMING

I was just reading the DLE manual and it said the timing on the 55 is set at 44 degrees before TDC. Is this a misprint? I thought they were set at 28-29 degrees. 44 degrees sounds wildly advanced.

I feel it is where DLE sets them but I would set mine at 28

so that means if you are gonna shift the timing that many degress, you would have to drill and tap new holes to relocate hall sensor?

On some engines, to fully retard the timing bracket gets you pretty close to 28 degrees

In all my years of building car, motorcycle, and marine engines I have never had one that timed that high or even over 34 degrees total advance. I have a new DLE coming from Tower this week so when it gets here I will check the timing on that engine. I think it's a misprint but I will let you know.

Me Neither

Most engines, to set the timing that high, they will pop and carry on and run hot.

In an email to a club mate of mine, DLE state that the timing is 32 deg and a plug gap of 0.6mm for all their engines.

If you got this motor from Hobbico, then there lies the problem. The manual that they made up for the DLE motor has the incorrect timing, the timing should be no more than 32 degree BTDC. On some DL motors the timing was out from the start, once adjusted they run a lot better and cooler.

I recieved the engine from Tower this week and checked the timing. It was set on 30 degrees. So I think the Hobbico manual is a misprint.

It is more than a misprint. Whoever wrote the manual didn't know what they were talking about. Whoever prof read it, didn't know anything about engines either. Goes to show you that engine manuals may not mean a whole lot? Some manufacturers or distributors do not spend much time thinking about them?

i know this a old post the 44* is were the module is activated to start the spark if you have a rcxl sensor tester and wheel on engine when you turn the engine the buzzer comes on at 44* and goes off at 28* thats when the spark occures. you could never time any engine at 44* unless you moved the sensor way out from its ajust range. when i first got my dles i said *** but the 28* to 30* is were you need to bewhen the plug fires. the engines run perfect there. i have set timing on alot of engines i even have a dle 55 running backwards on a p-38 lighting that a friend has, talk about looking cool swinging a 20x8 pusher prop zoar at 7500 you should hear that plane running sounds great very loud. amyway i hope this cleared some things up

rmoose,

You are correct. The plug fires when the magnet leaves the sensor. To measure the timing, you must turn the prop in the direction the engine runs. If you turn the prop backwards, you will get the 44 degrees like whoever wrote the Tower (DLE) manual did.

Enjoy

I would think after all this time that Tower (Hobbico) would have corrected the manual over such a blatant mistake as that. I guess not.

I one time downloaded one of those Tower .PDF manuals and corrected the timing number just to see if I could edit and do it. To edit the manual adds a lot of memory to it.
