Default PC PSU ----- 12v supply

I have a 12v field charger, and i dont want to connect it to the field battery to charge the batteries at home. so i realized i had a old PC's PSU which converted 240v to 12v. so all it needed was a quick convertion. and it was quick. now i have a fully working transformer, and i didnt pay a pound!

Default RE: PC PSU ----- 12v supply

Hello!
I have one question:
I am trying the same thing as you now, and I have an old perfectly working AT PC power supply which hase 8 amps at 12v, so I took it out of the computer case, and plugged it into the mains, but it does not turn on, unless I have the plugs to the mainboard inserted too. it does have a seperate switch for ON/OFF, so i thought that it should turn on, without the mainboard, but it doesn't.
when I hook the black, and the blue (+12v) wires up to a volt meter, and I turn the pc power supply (not connected to mainboard) on, it gives some volts, in pulses, but after that: nothing.
Does somebody have an idea how to bypass this circuit so that it turns on without the mainboard attached? p.s. it is nót an ATX, so the switch Ã*s external.
Any help would be very nice!
Greatings, Hugo

The power supplies in the AT PSU are "switching" types. That means they need a minimum load to actually operate. You may need to add a 20 to 40 ohm 10watt resistor across the output so it can turn on.

I used a 10 oh resistor, like 3$ from Radio Shack. While there get a Ciggarette lighter socket and adapter and use it for the output. You can use the charger in your car or at home with the same plug.
