Roger,

Nik,
The starter is custom made by a company in Texas.. They make them for all kind of engines. You have to send them the engine and they make and custom fit the starter. Not Cheap though.

John,
It won't be ready to fly until late summer, in the mean time, have a look at my 34% construction and go down the page, you can see a size comparison of the Big Edge with my daugther which is 5'6".

34% Edge

Roger,

Nice jugs! What did you use for color? Paint, powdercoat? Also, I have a ZDZ80 that just about wears my arm out to start sometimes, can you tell me who did your starter and about what you have in it ($)?

Thanks!

Hi Ben,
I use an anodizing paint good for 500 degrees that the hotrodders use under the hood of there cars. I also bake the paint.
As for the starter, Its from a company from Texas called Brookside Machines. They do all kind of starters for all kinds of engines. The down side, you have to send your engine in for fitting. This my second one, the other one is gone to a UAV company.

The price, well as they say if you must ask, you can't afford it , but I'll tell you anyway, this one because of the Astro Cobalt 40 motor used, cost $500.00 plus shipping. Not cheap.

As for your ZDZ 80, there is a better way to start it without flipping through the way you do.

Close choke, full throttle, and then instead of flipping through, just rock the prop from side to side just bumping the compression. You will hear the carb sound change when the fuel gets there. Then Throttle to idle, open choke, ignition on, and voila, 1 flip most of the time.

Roger,

Thanks for the starting tip, I'll try that. Flipping it through would sometimes take 15 flips and sometimes 5, just depending on what mood it was in.

$500 isn't outrageous from the looks of the components in that electric start. It would be nice to flip a switch and go.

Thanks for the info!

The starter itself is 28 oz. I haven't checked with the batteries yet, but it needs 1800ma at 24 volts, plus the ESV. Since the engine is quite lite for its size, I can use the weight in front on the EDge.

$500.00 is quite expensive, but don't forget, every starter is different and is matched and tested at the factory.

Some paints can insulate - some reflect and some are conductive .
I wish I knew what kind of numbers on changes from plain cast aluminum are really possible.
Anybody have any numbers
How is the test performed?
We all know that black cars get hotter in the sun-- but how is the paint making the aluminum give up heat more rapidly?
Or is it allowing the air to flow deeper into the fins?
I am a bit lost on this one.

Hey Roger,
I picked up a can of the "Dupli-color Metalcast" (in blue) and painted the cyl.& prop washer of my ZDZ-40RV.
Then I wanted to bake it, like you did yours, so in to the over it went at 250 for 15 mins.
The results are very good.
Thanks for the help
