Default Can I use any micro servos for feda heli

My Feda dragonfly has arrived! Now I like to install the radio gears. I have always use JR product and I like to know if I can use any micro servo like JR NES-371 on FEDA. I know with larger heli sometimes you need high speed servo. I have not heard anybody uses jr micro servo. Hitect and gws seem to be the most popular one. So the question is: do I need to use high speed servo like hitect hs50 for FEDA? I am completely new on heli and this is my first one.

I'm going to be using those HS-55 Micro servos that are cool looking BLUE from Hitec. I have a hummingbird coming and it's the same as your dragon fly. I think it should be ok to use micro servos.

Default hitec

That seems to be a popular choice of servo. On the specification hs50 is a faster servos with less torque. Not sure if it matters for hummingbird/dragonfly.

The next set I am ordering Futaba servos. They have more torque than anything else I have been able to find. The HS-55's are nice too.

Futaba S3103 Mini

Torque:

4.8VDC:
17 oz-in. (1.22 kg-cm)

6.0VDC:
21 oz-in. (1.51 kg-cm)

Speed @ 60 Degrees:

4.8VDC:
0.11 seconds

6.0VDC:
0.09 seconds

Bearing Type:

Bronze Bushings

Case Size:

0.9" x 0.4" x 0.8" (23 x 10 x 20mm)

Weight: 0.30 oz (8.5g)

Wire Length: 6.5" (Including plug

BTW, I think the JR NES-371 might be just a little to big to fit between the servo quides.

Default Servo

Gazoo,

Thanks for the info. Actually the shop that sell me the heli also sell the Futaba servo and he recommended to me. But since I use jr equipment I decided not to go for it. But now I think I will get the futaba servos and just change the lead and modify it.

tocano,
I read somewhere that you only need to file something on the Futaba servo plug so it will fit into a JR receiver. Hmmm....

Ok, I just found it. Please refer to the following link for more info. But you might already know this.

Does anyone know if it's ok to TAKE the casing off of a server or a receiver and use light shrink wrap to get rid of some weight?

I know it is OK on a receiver but it may void the warranty. There is also a way to do it with a servo, but I don't know the weight saving would be worth the trouble.

The best thing to do if you can afford it is to get LiPo batteries. You will get at least 20 minutes of flying time. The LiPo battery is less than half the weight of the birdseed, and produces twice the amperage. You would also need to get a LiPo charger.

Advantages: Lighter weight, more battery capacity, longer flight times.

Disadvantages: Cost, need to get a LiPo charger, time to fully charge the battery.

I recently installed the LiPo battery in my HB and will never go back to the birdseeds.

Default casing

Is it really worth while to go to that extend? How much more flight do you get by removing the casing? I would think that is so insignificant to the performance of the heli. But then again I am new.

Just make sure it puts out enough torque. The MPI servos that come with the Hb kit are rated at 11 in-oz. I think this is borderline which is one of the reason I am getting new servos.

Don't be too weight conscience. Saving a few grams here and there will not increase your flying times that much.

Default servo

This is the detail:

JR ES 306 : Dimensions 19.5 x 11.5 x 21mm , 0.5kg-cm , 0.1s/60* , weight 6 grams

JR-NES371: Dimensions 21.5 x 11.5 x 22mm , 1.3kg-cm , 0.23s/60* , weight 9grams

HS-55 Feather Specifications: Torque 1.1kg-cm, Weight 7.6g, Size 2.8 x 11.6 x 24mm

As you can see the 371 has 2.5 times more torque than ES306.
NES371 is the slowest one but still only .23s/60* which is still very fast. I actually have 371s, maybe I'll try it first before start buying more servos.

Thanks for the heads up guys, I hope the HS-55 will work ok. I do plan on putting every mod you can think of onto this humminbird. It's my first Heli, I'm going to just put effort into it.

I know what you mean. I wish I would have bought separates rather than ordering the kit from Century. I have replaced the Century Gyro for a HH Gyro, and next will be the servos.

The heli is great though. I am sure you will be happy with the HS-55's. Hitec does make good stuff.

One thing. Don't spend a lot of money on mods you don't need until you can hover reasonably well. For example, the aluminum swashplate in not necessary.

There is one mod I do recommend and that is the shaft collar mod. It is the only mod that should be done, but it is really not necessary either. Another mod I did right away was to get the heat sink for the tail motor. You can get these mods from helihobby.

Do you have a picture of the shaft collar? I'm still learning what everything is on a heli. But thanks, I will try not to go over board until I get it to hover smoothly..

Default RE: Can I use any micro servos for feda heli

I was thinking of replacing the stock servos. I would like to use the hitec, but the plugs are not the same.. the plugs on the micro interface are different. Is there an adapter?
